How to use the time calculator

Enter a start time and end time in the fields above and press Calculate — the result is shown instantly. Press "Now" to quickly fill in the current time.

The time calculator shows the difference in three formats: hours and minutes, decimal hours, and total minutes. It also handles night shifts automatically — if the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculation wraps across midnight.

You can also enter an optional hourly wage to quickly see what the time is worth in dollars. For a complete work week with breaks and overtime, try our time card calculator. Need to add or subtract multiple time periods? Use the "Add or subtract time" tool further down the page.

Why show time in decimal format?

When calculating pay, you multiply the number of hours by the hourly rate. The format "8 hours 30 minutes" doesn't work directly in that calculation — you need the decimal form, 8.50 hours.

For example: if your hourly rate is $25 and you worked 8 hours and 45 minutes, that's 8.75 x $25 = $218.75. The decimal format makes it easy to calculate pay without manually converting minutes. Need to figure out your hourly rate from an annual salary? Use our hourly rate calculator.

Most payroll systems and accounting software use time in decimal format, so it's useful to know how your hours look in that format.

Add and subtract time

Sometimes you need to add up multiple time periods — for example, total time for several meetings, trips, or work shifts during a day. With the tool above, you can add any number of rows and choose whether each row should be added or subtracted.

The result is shown in the same three formats as the time calculator: hours and minutes, decimal hours, and total minutes.
